The nonmetallic mineral products manufacturing industry has an expansive reach in the marketplace as its goods are used by a variety of industries, especially in construction. Demand is generally tied to commercial, residential and infrastructure spending. Unlike many of today's industries, nonmetallic mineral product manufacturing remains relatively low-tech and feels less pressure to modernize at a rapid pace. Although domestic demand for products is increasing, intense competition from foreign imports poses an immense threat to the health of the industry. Low-cost, foreign products continue to penetrate the market, making success dependent on low-cost raw materials and innovative new product applications.
